SPATIAL SOUND COLLECTION
This is a collection of environmental sounds and sounds from interventions that I recorded at the site. I used Reaper to edit these spatial sounds together and explore their differences and how they affect perception.
SUMMARY
In these three spaces, the same sounds come across differently due to their size and the echoes, which leads to varying perceptions.Under the bridge, the small space creates clear and short echoes, making high-frequency sounds, like the high notes of the bassoon and the sound of bells, stand out more. This also boosts the overall volume, giving me a sense of tension and pressure.
By the water, the larger space allows sounds to travel farther, with echoes lasting longer and reflections becoming more blurred. This makes the sounds fuller, especially the low-frequency ones, like footsteps and the bassoon's low notes. It creates a feeling of calm and relaxation.
In the grass, the plants and soil absorb sound well, resulting in weaker echoes and a lower overall volume. This environment feels joyful and relaxing.
SOUND COLLECTION
12 Aug - 01 Oct, 2024 Site: Hackney Wick ( 51°32'54.8"N 0°01'36.5"W)
This section primarily collects the same sounds from different spaces within the site, exploring the variations in sound caused by factors such as space size, echoes, reverberation, and spatial materials. The collected spatial sounds include footstep sounds, instrument sounds, shouts, bell sounds, as well as ambient sounds recorded on-site and various sound generated during the intervention process.
